SUSPECT:                  JENNIFER SWEENEY, AGE 28 OF APPLE VALLEY

UPDATE:

Deputy Chapdelaine of the Victorville Police Station was contacted by a female regarding the hit and run that took place on March 20th, 2010.  The female identified herself as a passenger of the vehicle that struck and killed the pedestrian on Palmdale Rd.  Through investigation it was learned that the driver of the vehicle, Jennifer Sweeney, was reportedly sending a text message from her cell phone and didn't see the pedestrian in the roadway before she struck him with her vehicle.   Suspect Sweeney rents a room at a home with other persons that are known to have criminal histories.  The female reported she didn't come forward sooner as she feared for her safety if she did.

On June 17th, 2010 at approximately 2:30 p.m., deputies of the Victorville Police Station served a search warrant at suspect Sweeney's residence in Apple Valley.  At the location deputies found roommates Kenneth Blair, age 48 and Rusti Borts, age 28 to be in possession of narcotic paraphernalia.  They were both cited and released at the location.  Suspect Sweeney was arrested and is being booked at Victor Valley Jail on charges of  PC192- manslaughter.

DATE/TIME:   03/20/10 2:42 AM

INCIDENT:     FATAL TRAFFIC COLLISION INVOLVING A PEDESTRIAN

LOCATION:   PALMDALE RD/SAN MATEO RD, VICTORVILLE

VICTIM:          NAME BEING WITHHELD PENDING POSITIVE IDENTIFICATION AND FAMILY NOTIFICATION

SUMMARY:

On Saturday, March 20th, 2010, at approximately 2:42 a.m., Deputies were dispatched to a report of a body in the number 2 eastbound lane of Palmdale Rd, between Pacoima and San Mateo Rd in the City of Victorville.  Reportedly the victim was down in the roadway and not visible to eastbound traffic.  The reporting party realized she had run over something in the roadway and made a u-turn to see what it was.  At that time she observed another vehicle run over the victim and lose control of their car, running off the side of the road.

Both directions of traffic on Palmdale Rd. were shut down from Amethyst to El Evado for approximately 4 hours.  Victorville Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) was called out to investigate the scene.  Preliminary investigation shows that the victim's death was a result of a traffic collision with a vehicle, however, not one of the vehicles present when deputies arrived.  Damages to the vehicles at the scene were consistent with the victim already lying in the roadway.  There were no injuries to the parties in the vehicles at the scene.

San Bernardino County Coroner's Office and Victorville MAIT will be conducting an ongoing investigation into this fatality.  Anyone with information is asked to contact Deputy Chapedelaine at Victorville Police 760-241-2911 or We Tip at 800-78-Crime.
